Phillip Coupal wants to set sexuality free

Phillip Coupal wants to set sexuality free…

The owner of Toronto’s Awaken Studio uses erotic massage and tantric exploration to help queer men explore their sexuality

I have known Phillip Coupal for barely two hours when I find myself browsing through his collection of leather jackets, high heels and a variety of flogging tools. Coupal smiles and laughs as he demonstrates his favourite, a black faux-fur whip, on my arm. A massage table sits in the middle of his studio, which is decorated with Coupal’s own artwork and an array of eccentric ornaments, including a wooden penis sculpture and a full-sized St Andrew’s cross. Behind cupboard doors, visitors can find neatly labelled bins containing ropes and ties, a few wooden spoons and more dildos than the average imagination knows what to do with.

Regardless of what his collection might suggest, Coupal’s work at Awaken Studio , located at 270 Carlaw Ave, seeks to take the focus and emphasis off sex and create a safe, pleasurable environment for queer male individuals, couples and groups to explore their sexuality.

Visitors can book part-day, full-day or weekend sessions with Coupal, which he describes as an “experiential embodied erotic exploration,” or attend structured group-touch exchanges, like “Taoist Erotic Massage” and “Sensual Touch and Tantric Exploration.”

Clothes are removed at the beginning of these five-hour group seminars, which usually consist of about 10 people. Coupal welcomes the tension that accompanies stripping down with a group of strangers. “Being naked makes everyone equal because clothing takes away from who we are as sexual beings,” he says. “We as a society are not educated that it’s natural to be sexual.”

Coupal says that there is sometimes a misconception about what takes place at his studio. His practice’s goal is not to contribute to the unattainable standard that the queer male community is presented with, but rather to teach his visitors to come as they are and accept themselves. “Sex sells. Naked sells. Communication is different,” Coupal says. “The focus is on the whole body to be an organism of sexual pleasure.”

Sexual pleasure definitely makes its way into the seminars. During “play days” at Awaken Studio, guests are put into pairs for 20 minutes to experiment with their own sexual desires. One activity has partners take turns filling in the blanks in the sentence, “For my pleasure, I would like you to ___________.”

“The biggest thing people take away is asking for what they want and not giving what they think they should be giving,” he says.

However, Coupal also works with clients who keep their clothes on during their time at his studio. He says his role fills Toronto’s need for a bodyworker that isn’t all about sex, but he also describes himself as a counsellor, sex coach and educator.

Coupal holds a certification in life skills from George Brown College and has worked as a counsellor since 2005. He became a coordinator for Body Electric School, which offers workshops in personal growth, eroticism and consciousness, but after leaving his position to host his own seminars, he was able to open Awaken Studio in January 2012.

The Queer Heart Talking Circle is a new monthly session Coupal is offering to queer males who feel isolated from the “big gay world.” The circle held its first meeting at Coupal’s studio on Jan 12, and he says the group is already looking forward to its next meeting, on Feb 9 at 1pm.

The eight members will be seeing Manon, Sandra and the Virgin Mary at Buddies in Bad Times as part of their plan to go on cultural outings in the queer community. Coupal looks forward to new members joining the circle, and says, “This is about building community right here in the city. It’s open to the queer world; everyone is welcome.”

Celebrating FREEDOM.

An introspection one year after setting myself free. Freeing myself from a business model and a business liaison that was, from my experience, unsupportive to me and the community that I represented, confrontational and blind to working and creating business from a heart centered model.

Today, as I was breathing and enjoying the freshness of my early morning walk, I pondered what this FREEDOM has meant for me. One year later and I am no longer shackled by the constraint of a larger body, domineering, bullying and demanding. In my business I have been able to open to a heart centered, more compassionate and gracious model of carrying on my LIFE work. In this freedom I have had to look to see where I go to exercise discipline and  to remain on course towards my goals.

These goals very simple and include:

  • Living from a SHAMELESS base
  • Enjoying Celebrating my FREEDOM
  • Flowing from my CREATIVITY
  • Walking GENTLY on the EARTH
  • Giving from a POWERFUL place
  • Offering from my heart, with GRACIOUSNESS and KINDNESS.

This personal and business FREEDOM has not had it’s fair share of challenges. The greatest of these is the sense of isolation I feel when I look around. I sometimes find it very difficult to see others who are living their passion and their heart from a business model that I am able to identify with. I have been working on opening my vision farther and farther, seeking out others who can operate their business and live their lives, opening their heart and offering to the world with, FEARLESSNESS, LOVE and COMPASSION.

As part of my work this summer. I will be building, nurturing and creating a project that I will call the “Awakening Tree“. This will be  tree in which one can place their personal wishes for what they would like to “AWAKEN” in their life. This project is inspired by the YOKO ONO HOPE TREE and the Guggenheim in Venice. For more information about the “AWAKEN TREE PROJECT” contact me at . Watch for more blogs about this project.

Always seeking and seeking always…

A little news

I have to say that I never thought that I would find myself running off to do another workshop!

I am very excited to say that I am running off to do another workshop! A great way of CELEBRATING my BODY of EMANCIPATION!

This time in the workshop is taking place in the foothills of the coastal mountains just outside of Vancouver. A place called Loon Lake, not the Loon Lake that is 1/2 way between Cache Creek and Clinton, but the Loon Lake that is near Maple Ridge. The workshop fits perfectly into my schedule on November 8 to 15. I think I will stay the weekend in Vancouver and perhaps fly up to Williams Lake to visit my family. 😉

Funny enough one of the things that sticks in my mind, and totally opens my heart to the work, is that this event is billed as a way to explore boundaries around intimacy and actually uses the word SEX in it’s title! YUM!

I am very excited that this event is in CANADA and is being run in a way that make sense financially. The inclusive nature is welcoming of all participants. The event is open to anyone and the fee is $650.00 for a week including food and accommodation (NOT in a tent!).  Also! This was of particular interest to me.

The workshop will be, in large part, driven by the participants. It will follow the long Faerie Circle tradition with each member having equal rights and responsibilities of participation. The facilitators will provide guidelines and a road-map to “sacred space” and a foundation of emotional and spiritual support for the workshop.

Here is a little clip about the event. From the website:

Sex Magick: Exploring the Boundaries of Intimacy

About the Workshop

Consider these questions . . .

  • How can I extend the limits of intimacy with my Faerie/Billy brothers?
  • Does sex constrain or expand my relationships with men?
  • How can I integrate sexual play into my intimate relationships?
  • Does recreational sex diminish my capacity for intimacy in a committed relationship?
  • How does the prevailing society’s prudishness dampen and undermine the intimacy in my relationships?
  • How does my sexuality and my spirituality inter-relate?
  • Are my sexual and my spiritual aspects one in the same?

If any of these issues resonate with you, join us for a concentrated exploration and testing of the waters of deeper intimacy, Sex Magick, and spirit/sex integration. Based on the successful and provocative workshops developed by Harry Hay, this 7-day retreat is designed to challenge and take down the fences keeping us from achieving levels of intimacy not previously found.

We face many barriers in working to realize our vision. AIDS, sexual addiction, objectification, ageism, looks-ism, internalized heterosexism, unrealistic expectations. These issues look large as we begin this crucial next step in manifesting our collective faerie vision – the ritual realization of subject-Subject consciousness that is the basis of Radical Faerie reality. We achieve our vision by collectively creating – as the core our Workshop, (and for the duration only) – a Ritual Space within which safe and sacred precinct we freely empower ourselves, and each other, to set aside our boundaries in order to experience the same total loving sharing with another as we do in loving ourselves.

– Harry Hay, from the original Sex Magick Call

This day feels like the beginning to me. It was not a week ago or even 12 days ago… this day feels like the start.

Today is a day that will be full of abundance and wisdom… This of course was the day that the Magi arrived… That is as far as my magical mind will go into the mysteries of Christianity. I prefer to follow a much more pagan and far more disorganized path…

Saturday was most amazing because I was able to be a part of an initiative for the movie “Epiphany” by Andrew Adams… A movie of how a man finds redemption through touch on a massage table. The making of this movie is something that I have supported for a couple of years. It is very heartening to see it coming together with a shooting date set for sometime at the end of March of this year. If you would like more information or are interested in supporting this ground breaking adventure, contact Andrew.

Over the last seven days I have had my own “Epiphany” around how I advertise and promote my services. On Saturday I set up meeting groups on social media (where I am not censored, but allowed). You will see much more of the Awaken Studio in the course of this year.

As I start the Salon Series on Wednesday evening I am growing exited and continuing to open rather than shut down in anticipatory anxiety… Breathing, Smiling and Action all help. The M4M Touch Exchange group will happen on Sunday January 13th. Registration is still open.

Let your Light Shine at Awaken Studio

I continue to be inspired by the “Gypsy” chandelier. All that LIGHT. All that COLOUR. All that SPARKLE. YUM

anal voyage

From FAB Magazine October 24,2012
Full Frontal…Popped Culture … Page 8

“Many many men don’t feel empowered or have enough
knowledge about their ass . . . it’s nothing that’s taught in
school,” says Phillip Coupal, counsellor, coach and body
worker. Coupal runs a series of workshops for men that
deal with various aspects of sex and sexuality. “In San
Francisco there are ‘sexological body workers’ and there
are ‘sacred intimates’ . . . all these people who will take you
on an erotic voyage. There’s very little of that [in Toronto],”
he says. A recent workshop dealt with genital touch, and
one in December will focus on being multiorgasmic,
but his upcoming workshop plunges into the tight but
receptive void of anal touch. “There is a lot of shame and
mythology about the ass, and this workshop will help
people gain a more conscious knowledge of it,” he says.
Coupal conducts an initial consultation with
prospective attendees, making sure they are suited to
this type of group situation. The workshop itself begins
on Friday, with experimentation and discussion to dispel
performance anxiety; Saturday involves introspective
exercises and conversation; and on Sunday, attendees are
paired off with random partners (this particular workshop
is not for couples) for some caressing, fi ngering and maybe
some play with toys. While Coupal occasionally holds
workshops that involve trans men, this particular event is
only for men who were born with male bodies.
Coupal stresses that while the workshop is very sexual
in nature, it is not a free-for-all sex fest. He says that often
“an orgy’s energy level will go up really high and might not
be as consensual or personal as this workshop will be.”

Dear Human

…Infused with divinity. Lived through the grace of stumbling. Demonstrated through the beauty of… messing up. Often. You didn’t come here to be perfect. You already are. You came here to be gorgeously human. Flawed and fabulous. …

… It’s enough. It’s Plenty.

On my Birthday a look at humanity and the human condition. -♥- Glad to be 56! Born in 56… This will only happen once! 😉

infused with divinity

Came across a posting this morning that asked “How connected are you to your inner child?”

This got me to wondering about how one can truly be connected to that inner child.

The clarity that came to me, was that play was the way that I was able to connect and access the boundless energy of the inner child.

Much of the work that I do in groups is about play. Exploring how we as a group can play together, have fun together, be wild and creative together, be still and connected together. Play and access to what is known as “Beginners Mind” or a place within our self where we are lacking negative judgements and harsh comparison. Accessing this new-found or rediscovered “naive” place can be a springboard into the joy and abandon of play, allowing for surrender into the new, creative and vibrant.

Play can enliven and stimulate LIFE Force, Kundalini, Chi.

Play can be a place where shame and guilt can be left to the side. Play can be a place where freedom and courage can reside. Play can be a portal into all of the potent and powerful creative source of the inner child.
